Macro-Nutrient Stoichiometry of Glacier Algae From the Southwestern Margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet

چکیده

Glacier algae residing within the surface ice of glaciers and sheets play globally significant roles in biogeochemical cycling, albedo feedbacks, melt world’s cryosphere. Here, we present an assessment macro-nutrient stoichiometry glacier algal assemblages from southwestern Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) margin, where widespread blooms proliferate during summer seasons. Samples taken mid-2019 ablation season revealed overall lower cellular carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) content than predicted by standard microalgal content:biovolume relationships, elevated C:N C:P ratios all cases, with estimated C:N:P 1,997:73:1. We interpret to reflect adaptation their characteristic oligotrophic environment. Such requirements would aid proliferation across nutrient poor cryosphere a warming world. Up-scaling our observations indicated potential for accumulate ∼ 29 kg C km 2 1.2 N marginal location mid-ablation period (early August), confirming previous modeling estimates. While long-term fate autochthonous production remains unconstrained, data presented here provide insight into possible quality dissolved organic matter that may be released

Holocene evolution of the western Greenland Ice Sheet: Assessing geophysical ice-sheet models with geological reconstructions of ice-margin change

Geophysical ice-sheet models are used to predict future ice-sheet dimensions and, in turn, these projections help estimate the magnitude of eustatic sea-level rise. Before models can confidently predict icesheet behavior, they must be validated by being able to duplicate the geological record of ice-sheet change. Here, we review geological records of Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) change, with emph...

Abrupt shift in the observed runoff from the southwestern Greenland ice sheet

The recent decades of accelerating mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet have arisen from an increase in both surface meltwater runoff and ice flow discharge from tidewater glaciers. Despite the role of the Greenland ice sheet as the dominant individual cryospheric contributor to sea level rise in recent decades, no observational record of its mass loss spans the 30-year period needed to assess ...

The effect of warming climate on nutrient and solute export from the Greenland Ice Sheet

doi: 10.7185/geochemlet.1510 Glacial meltwater runoff is likely an important source of limiting nutrients for downstream primary producers. This has particular significance for regions surrounding the Greenland Ice Sheet, which discharges >400 km3 of meltwater annually. The Arctic is warming rapidly but the impact of higher discharge on nutrient export is unknown. We present four years of hydro...

Thermal tracing of retained meltwater in the lower accumulation area of the Southwestern Greenland ice sheet

We present in situ firn temperatures from the extreme 2012 melt season in the southwestern lower accumulation area of the Greenland ice sheet. The upper 2.5 m of snow and firn was temperate during the melt season, when vertical meltwater percolation was inefficient due to a 5.5 m thick ice layer underlying the temperate firn. Meltwater percolation and refreezing beneath 2.5 m depth only occurre...
